EfficiencyOne releases 2023 Annual Report

May 2, 2024 – Halifax/Kjipuktuk, NS – EfficiencyOne, the nonprofit administrator of Efficiency Nova Scotia, released its 2023 Annual Report, titled: Transforming the way people use energy. The Report highlights the significant impact Nova Scotians collectively made through EfficiencyOne’s programs in 2023. Nova Scotians are saving over $4.8 billion in lifetime energy savings, including over $500 million for low-income homeowners and renters, since 2011 through energy efficiency programs.

For the fourth straight year, EfficiencyOne programs and services have reduced more GHG emissions than the previous year, all while saving Nova Scotians money, conserving resources, improving wellbeing, and combatting climate change.

“Nova Scotians have always been leaders when it comes to embracing energy efficiency,” says Stephen MacDonald, President and CEO, EfficiencyOne. “Significant investments in our programs from both the Province of Nova Scotia and the Government of Canada, coupled with rising costs for so many Nova Scotians, has made 2023 a record year for applications; we’ve been happy to support both residents and businesses transform the way they use energy and reduce their energy bills.”

Support for EfficiencyOne’s non-electric programs are made possible with investments from the Province of Nova Scotia and the Government of Canada. Support for EfficiencyOne’s electric programs are made possible through the Demand Side Management process, funded by ratepayers and regulated by the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board. 2023 highlights include: 

• Since 2011 Nova Scotians have saved over $4.8 billion in lifetime energy savings, including over $500 million for low-income homeowners and renters.
• Total energy savings in 2023 equal the annual energy use of over 29,300 Nova Scotian households.
• Programs averted Nova Scotians from releasing 111,870 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions (CO2 eq), the equivalent of avoiding the use of over 40 million litres of oil.
• EfficiencyOne partnered with over 380 Nova Scotia businesses employing more than 4,000 people, including heat pump installers, lighting specialists, solar PV installers, and builders.
• We supported over 2,400 Nova Scotians through our low-income, Mi’kmaq and other Diverse Communities programs, including upgrades to over 200 shelters, transition houses, and affordable rentals.

“The Province has set a goal of reducing GHG emissions by 53% below 2005 levels by 2030,”

says Bill Lahey, founding Chair of the Board, EfficiencyOne and President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of King’s College. “The combined effects of Efficiency Nova Scotia programs over the last decade resulted in the avoidance of 3.7 megatonnes of GHGs in 2023, further demonstrating the critical role investments in energy efficiency play in helping Nova Scotia achieve its climate goals.”
