Please start by introducing yourself.
My name is Brianna Barton and I’m an Efficiency Specialist on the HomeWarming team at EfficiencyOne. I recently graduated as valedictorian from the Energy Sustainability Engineering Technology Program at Nova Scotia Community College’s Annapolis Valley campus.
Can you describe your current role and some of the projects you’re involved in?
As an Efficiency Specialist at EfficiencyOne, I focus on ensuring efficient service delivery, overseeing installed measures, and managing and maintaining data within the HomeWarming program. I am fortunate to be part of an incredibly supportive and experienced team who have been instrumental in my learning process. Their dedication to excellence inspires me and I look forward to collaborating with them to drive process improvements and deliver even greater impact.
How did your co-op experience shape your career path and influence your decision to join EfficiencyOne full-time? How has your role evolved since then?
During my co-op work term in summer 2023 as a Business Development Coordinator, I gained valuable insights into the energy efficiency industry. Working on the Demand Response Program and collaborating with businesses to promote energy solutions reinforced my decision to join EfficiencyOne full-time. The incredible people at EfficiencyOne solidified that choice—the organization is full of kind, dynamic individuals who are deeply committed to driving the changes the world needs.
Since starting my full-time role in May 2024, I’ve taken on more complex projects and refined my ability to manage participant escalations and service delivery improvements. I’ve also gained new technical insights into energy-efficient product installations, which expanded my understanding of the industry.
What advice would you give to current students or recent grads considering a career in engineering technology or the energy sector?
My advice to current students and recent graduates is to embrace the challenges and actively pursue learning opportunities. The energy sector is evolving quickly, and success will depend on a combination of technical expertise and strong communication skills. Even though you’ve completed your education, don’t overlook the importance of networking—cultivate relationships with people who are in the positions you aspire to reach and be open to learning from their experiences. Gaining practical experience is how you grow, so don’t hesitate to try new things or ask for help when needed.
Can you share your thoughts on the impact of emerging technologies on your role and the energy sector?
Emerging technologies are having a significant impact on both my role and the broader energy sector. Through the HomeWarming program, we are introducing energy-efficiency technologies like heat pumps to low-income households, which is critical for reducing overall energy demand and usage. This is just one example of how technology can create positive change in energy consumption.
My experience with Nova Scotia Community College’s applied research team deepened my understanding of the potential of advanced technologies like thermal storage heat pumps. We explored the use of ceramic materials and how mass industrial automation could reduce strain on the grid during peak usage. Although still in development, these innovations could revolutionize programs like HomeWarming and help us achieve greater energy efficiency and sustainability on a much larger scale. I’m excited about the possibilities these emerging technologies could bring to my work and the sector.
How does EfficiencyOne support your professional development?
EfficiencyOne offers educational opportunities, training, and a pathway for internal advancement—this support enables me to stay ahead of industry trends and build my expertise.
What is your favorite part about working at EfficiencyOne?
My favourite part about working at EfficiencyOne is the inclusive and supportive environment. The focus on work-life balance and continuous professional growth makes it a rewarding place to advance my career.
What is something you are passionate about outside of the workplace?
Outside of work, I love riding my motorcycle (1985 Honda Shadow 500cc) and seeking out new adventures! I’m passionate about water sports such as kayaking, swimming, and attempting to surf (emphasis on attempting). This winter, I’ll likely be working on improving my skiing skills, and I also enjoy gaming and Dungeons & Dragons.
